Damage you cannot see from the ground

Hail damage is often invisible from the street. Cracked tiles may still sit in place until the next rain, and dents in metal sheets only show at the right angle. Skylights, vents, gutters and solar panels can all be hit. A close inspection after a hailstorm is the only way to know.

After a storm

1. Stay off the roof. It may be damaged and slippery.
2. Look from the ground and inside. Note any water, stains or debris.
3. Take photos of anything you can see, inside and out, with dates.
4. Contact your insurer if you think there is damage. They will explain their process.
5. Book an inspection. A roofer can document the damage and, if needed, fit temporary protection.

Repairs

Cracked tiles are replaced to match as closely as possible. Badly dented or holed metal sheets are replaced; minor dents may be cosmetic. Broken skylights, damaged flashings and crushed gutters are repaired or replaced. If a lot of the roof is affected, a restoration or replacement may be part of the discussion with your insurer.
