After a Hailstorm: Checking Your Roof
Stay off the roof, document what you can see, talk to your insurer and get it checked up close.
First, stay safe
A roof after a storm may be damaged, wet and slippery, and there may be loose material or electrical hazards. Do not climb up to look.
What you can check from the ground and inside
- Broken tile pieces or granules in the gutters and on the ground.
- Dents in gutters, downpipes, metal fences or the car, which suggest the size of the hail.
- Damaged skylights, vents or solar panels.
- Water stains, drips or damp insulation inside.
Document it
Take dated photos of everything: the sky, hail on the ground, visible damage, and any water inside. Your insurer will want to know when the damage happened.
Your insurer
If you think the roof is damaged, contact your insurer and follow their process. Some insurers arrange their own assessors and repairers; others ask for quotes. Ask before arranging repairs.
Temporary protection
If water is coming in, a roofer can fit a temporary cover or replace broken tiles to stop further damage while the claim is assessed.
